Effective methods of teaching Spoken English

Methods to teach Spoken English

There is no such course that can make you speak in English. Of course, there are courses which can teach you stuffs like how to start a conversation or you can get tips on how to become a better communicator. But you can't stay theoretical as far as Spoken English is concerned. You need to apply these tips at once. The main thing is find someone who can converse with you daily in English. There are many apps now a days that can help you to boost your English speaking skills as you desire.

English speaking friends are few. Many of us do not have the privilege of having friends who talk you in English. Having a South Indian friend is an advantage as most of them will talk to you in English.

One of the most effective app is CAMBLY. Here you can talk to one-an-one tutors who are based in countries like USA, UK, Canada, Australia and almost all the countries.

What you can do basically as a tutor is to take a topic that is relevant to your students from academic point of view and start conversing on it.

Challenges a tutor face

Shyness of students. Now these things are natural. Shyness automatically comes. I don't want to go to the science of shyness. What is in our control is to minimize this shyness.

Shyness leading to nervousness. Most often this shyness leads to nervousness.

Boredom due to same topic.

Reading

Advise the students to read books daily. They may also read blogs, articles, newspapers, magazines etc. that are in English. This will add to their vocabulary stock internally and make them more confident every time they talk to someone in English.

Reading Simple Stories

You can collect one beginner level story book. You must have come across story books like "Aladdin" , Akbar and Birbal", "Panchatantra" etc. that include short stories with very simple language. Now your task is to read a story daily and write the same on your own without looking at the story. You will stuck at some points and will not be able to frame some sentences or express with words. At that moment, you will return to the book and check how the author crafted the same sentences there. This way you will encounter new words or phrases and which will consequently add to your vocabulary.

Why this technique is effective?

Because here you will understand the context of the word you are learning. Context is missing when you decide to learn five words daily and so it will never work like that or you may have to put lots of effort. So, my advice to you is read and revisit the book.

Vast vocabulary is not relevant

The next important thing is you don't require a vast range of vocabulary to speak good English. In fact extraordinary vocabulary may sometimes backfire and create problems. Just see the difference of the two sentences.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to the honorable Chief Guest.

It's a moment of paramount gaiety that I confer my unfeigned thanks to the venerable Chief Guest.

Which one can create problems if your audience is middle school students? So, it is clear that you have to speak English according to your audience. It is better to use simple English to get a vast audience. Because people only listen to you if their thought process resonate with yours.
